Review: Crispi Crunch (feat. Sori)–“Thumbs Up”

Crispi Crunch gets two thumbs up for their fun new parody song.

Did you like the song?
Oh yeah. For a song that is parodying other songs, it stands quite well on its own and is fast and catchy! Good job.

What was your favorite part of the song?
Even though it is not pronounced particularly well, the “thumbs up” part is so great. I also really enjoyed the fast Korean rap of the verses.

Does the English make you want to rip your eardrums out?
There is a ton of English in this song, and for the most part it’s actually great. They even use jargon I’ve only rarely heard in Kpop, like referencing their homies and the infamous Shawty (and does Csp almost say, “What the f---?” Brave.) There were only a few awkward lines like “we are better” (than what?) and “get some noise” instead of “make some noise,” but that’s just me being picky. Also there is a line: “hello to my BEE.” What does that mean? Bureau of Energy Efficiency? Is it some hip hop lingo I’m not getting? However, my main complaint here is that the title of the song, “Thumbs Up,” is not pronounced well.

Did you like the video?
This music video was hilarious, especially the ending. I crack up every time I see it. “Thumbs Up” essentially parodies many elements of rap songs and music videos in effective and amusing ways. I can’t wait until they make a new music video. Way to go, guys!

Was there a storyline? If so, did it make sense?
Crispi Crunch wander around a typical club scene and hit on girls in the most awkward ways possible. The girls’ total irritation at them is very funny, as is their response to being chastised by the bouncer.

Crispi Crunch

Yeah. The girls are obviously not impressed with these wooing skills.

There’s also a scene outdoors where they are filming and keep getting so into their emphatic hand gestures that they hit the camera and have to be told off by their manager. I like the differences between their gangster personas and their supremely humbled apologies.

Was the dance cool and distinctive?
The dance is fun because it’s deliberately uncool! They basically just jump around and kind of balance on one leg with their hands in the air (like they just don’t care!).

Do the members look good?
Yup! Crispi Crunch has two (formerly three) members: Lil’ Cheezy and Csp.

I’m not a big fan of Csp’s haircut here, but again I think it’s deliberately nerdy for humorous effect.

Their fellow JS Prime Entertainment labelmate Sori is also in this MV, and she was pretty cool (especially since she wants to “show you [her] body”).

Which member stood out the most?
Forget members, THIS SCENE stood out the most:

Whew! Talk about hot! *fans self*

Literally, my jaw dropped when I saw this. Of course I think they only did it to generate controversy and buzz (see the teasers below), but…well, I guess it worked!

Do you like it enough to buy the song?
I didn’t think I did, but after hearing it so many times I think I will buy it! It’s grown on me a lot, and I always love Korean rap. It’s so fast and sexy sounding.

Any ending thoughts?
Man, the three teasers for this MV are some of the best I have ever seen. Really funny and provocative. Check them out:

1. Teaser 1: Csp lights a cigarette in the only possible way.
2. Teaser 2: Crispi Crunch get sweaty and shirtless and…well, you know where it goes from there. (See the making of, too, for extra laughs.)
3. Teaser 3: basically they keep hitting the camera and their manager keeps scolding them (also in the actual MV). Soooo funny.

Also, here's the uncensored version, if you are interested, although overall I prefer the censored version. I think this one kind of crosses the line from funny to a bit too much bathroom humor/the boys coming on too strongly to girls.

Boyfriend’s one-liner:
“I think Andy Samberg would be proud.”

  2. @Mochiko

Thanks! :) And you're right, I should leave a link to the uncensored version...I've edited it now with a link.

Overall, oddly enough, I prefer the censored version, even though they're both definitely funny. I think the uncensored one kind of crosses the line from amusing to a bit too much bathroom humor/the boys coming on too strongly to girls. But I do like both versions. :)

  3. The thumbs up and bobbing head reminds me of Night at the Roxbury!
