Review: SS501’s Kim Hyun Joong–“Lucky Guy”

Kim Hyunjoong tests his luck by becoming a gambling card shark in his new music video.

Did you like the song?
This song and concept seemed to be a 1950s/early 60s one, complete with shooby doo wop! It reminded me of Seungri’s V.V.I.P. more than anything else with the fast paced horns and catchy chorus.

What was your favorite part of the song?
Oh man, that chorus. It is awesome. “Shake it shake it, shake shake it shake it!” And I loved the “in the sky, yeah” part.

Does the English make you want to rip your eardrums out?
Quite the opposite. There is a ton of English here, including basically the entire chorus, and it’s all close to perfect (just a few telltale pronunciations). But Hyunjoong’s voice sounds great in English.

Did you like the video?
This video is a mixture of the Megan Fox car scene in “Tranformers” and the card game in “Casino Royale.” I was going to get on my feminist soapbox and cry sexism and look disapprovingly at Hyunjoong for the clearly male-gaze camera angle hugging Hong Soohyun’s curves in this, but then she turned out to be a cop. (I mean, much of this video still objectifies women, but at least we get the last word.) Still, I don’t feel like it reflects well on Hyunjoong when there are shots like this.

Super necessary for the, uh, plot.

Hyunjoong, you kinda look like a creeper.

I thought the mug shots were pretty amusing, though, even if some looked awkward.

Big hair: the new insole?

Was there a storyline? If so, did it make sense?
Like Gilme in Clover’s “An Oppa I Know,” there is a price on Hyunjoong’s head (of a million dollars, wow! Apparently he’s worth more than Gilme).

And what is that creepy alien/cat/card demon thing? o.O

Kim Hyunjoong Lucky Guy luck bronze statue

Oh, never mind, it’s the God of Luck or something.

Anyway, he picks up a smokin’ hot lady (actress Hong Soohyun) with a broken down car.

She’s very amused by him.

He takes her to an upscale casino where he has a posse waiting...

Gamblin’ like a boss.

They meet the requisite Rich Douchebag With Attractive Harem…

Kim Hyunjoong Lucky Guy rich guy

You can tell he’s an arrogant bastard because he has a printed shirt with no jacket. Never trust people in casinos with printed shirts. Actually, just never trust people in casinos.

They have the cliché card table confrontation, Hyunjoong wins, Soohyun reluctantly begins to like him despite her better judgment, they somehow hire the horn section of a band…

Kim Hyunjoong Lucky Guy horn section

Sweet!

Rich Douchebag has to ask his harem for their jewelry in order to pay his debts (what a jerk), Hyunjoong is raking in the winnings, and Soohyun turns out to be a cop who arrests Hyunjoong.

What a buzzkill. Luck is definitely not a lady tonight.

But seriously, if Soohyun was a cop all along, then did she stand around outside waiting for Hyunjoong to pick her up? How many other guys did she have to turn down before he showed up? Was this part of a government takedown? Is she working for the secret service or something? Is he wanted for tax evasion? Why did she change clothes if she was just going to change into the blue dress later? Where did she get that dress? Do those musicians even realize they’re in a Kpop idol’s music video? So many unanswered questions.

Was the dance cool and distinctive?
VERY! And it matches the lyrics and concepts; it’s great. I love the brushing hands move and the shaking and throwing the dice move. There’s also a cool wave and a neat girls vs. guys part (which is so unusual in Kpop MVs, and thus so welcome!).

Kim Hyunjoong Lucky Guy dance guys vs. girls

It’s like a scene straight out of “Guys and Dolls” or “Greece.”

Kim Hyunjoong coin flip

And you can never go wrong with the sexy coin flip.

Do the members look good?
It’s kind of weird because I’m used to seeing Hyunjoong with his hair over his eyes, like this:

Kim Hyunjoong

Basically how he looked in Boys Over Flowers.

So seeing him look like this, with his hair gelled out of his face, is…rather peculiar for me. He looks like a completely different person, doesn’t he?

Kim Hyunjoong Lucky Guy

Still hot, of course.

Which member stood out the most?
Despite the initial awkward uber-sexuality of Hyunjoong’s relationship with Soohyun, I think they made a pretty cute couple (their smirks at each other were really funny and believable). And Hyunjoong oozes confidence and charisma like WOAH. I completely bought his role here.

Do you like it enough to buy the song?
Heck, yes! “Shake it shake it, shake shake it shake it!”

Any ending thoughts?
I refuse to tag this as anything but SS501 in hopes that they will soon do an album together again. So there. Oh, yeah, and Hyunjoong? I now understand why you’re the most popular member, and you’ve just gained another fan.

Boyfriend’s one-liner:
“Clearly, to jump into a stranger’s car, you must change your shirt and expose yourself to oncoming traffic.”

  1. another great review. :D
i do have a small bone to pick--you put in a screencap of the band playing, and your caption called it the "brass section of a band. there is CLEARLY a saxophone right in the middle of your screencap--NOT BRASS.  **band geek rageface**

other than that.....yea, definitely with you on the weirdness of his new hair o_O just got through watching BOF as a matter of fact, and i had to do a double-take to make sure it was actually him.

  2. Thank you! I was going to put "jazz section," but then I wasn't sure if that can be considered jazz without drums and piano.

I see...so despite the fact that saxophones are made of brass, they're still considered woodwinds because they have reeds. Interesting. See, I only ever played piano and guitar; I'm lost on any horn instruments. Thanks for letting me know; I will correct it to say "horn section"! :)I only saw a bit of BOF and wasn't 100% into it, to be honest. But the more I see of his new hair, the more I'm liking it, even though it was weird at first. :D

  3. haha it's ok. I played clarinet primarily, but i also played the tenor sax in jazz band. I think the best term might be "jazz ensemble".  you make a good point about the rhythm section--but "jazz ensemble" is pretty much a loose term that can be applied to any group of musicians playing jazz music, as far as I can tell at least. Jazz is definitely the most flexible kind of music out there, haha.

and it's not just that they have reeds--flutes and piccolos are also woodwinds, but they don't use reeds.  The difference is that brass instruments use a vibration of the lips to create the sound, whereas woodwind players blow a column of air across either a reed or a sharp edge.

and yeah...BOF does take a while to get into.  >.<  but i LOVELOVELOVE the manga and Japanese drama, so i stuck with it--and i was rewarded.  the manga and Japanese version are great, but they focus more on the stuff that happens, the plotlines and such.  the Korean version, however, puts a lot more emphasis on character and relationship development, and took the time to develop a couple side characters that kinda got pushed to the side in the original--which made me VERY HAPPY. XD now i need to go back and reread the manga and rewatch the Jdrama XD XD XD XD

  4. Ooh, good point about the piccolos and flutes. I think I get it now. Haha, I almost was going to play clarinet in high school, but my mom made me choose between starting clarinet and continuing piano. In retrospect, I think it would have been interesting to play a wind instrument, but I'm probably too lazy to start now. My dad would have loved if I played the sax. He loves smoky saxophone. :)
I watched more of the Japanese version than the Korean version, but I remember now why I didn't like the Korean version--the main actress annoyed me beyond belief. She was just so...whiny? Something about her.But maybe I was just trying to compare it to the Ouran High School Host Club anime too much. I beyond adore that anime, and I wanted a live-action of it. (And now there is one! Although I haven't seen it yet. I'm kind of scared to because I have such high expectations, and I don't want to be let down.)

  5. haha i wish i'd continued piano, it's a much more versatile instrument than the clarinet.  I actually started clarinet in middle school, so i had a full 7 years on it. :)

and yeah, goo hye sun is pretty annoying at first, but i feel like everything starts coming together later on--she gets more mature, and less annoying. and you say you watched "more of" the Japanese version? you mean you didn't finish it? :O NOOOOO YOU MUST WATCH!! and if you like anime, have you tried watching the Hana Yori Dango anime? or reading the original manga?  i started off with the manga, tho i haven't watched the anime yet (tho i am interested in watching the alternate-reality movie..........it's mentioned on Wikipedia :D :D)

and doooooooon't compare BOF to Ouran...i LOVE Ouran as well, but although they start off with similar premises (poor girl in a ridiculously rich school, ends up becoming close friends with the most popular/richest/most powerful boys in school....lots and lots of comedy ensues), they go in very different directions.  Hana Yori Dango is more....cohesive, i think. Ouran has a great start, but it gets kinda...weird...in its serious plotline.

I recommend trying to watch one of the dramas or the anime (NOT the chinese/taiwanese adaptation, those are pretty fail by all accounts), and then see how you feel about the plot.  the Japanese versions stick pretty close to the original, but the Korean version deviates quite a bit, in a good way imo.  It's not a hit series for nuttin'.

  6. also, for some reason i don't even see the comment platform on your latest review (tablo ft taeyang).....any idea why that is? o_O

  7. Hmm, the Disqus comments aren't working on that page? Weird. They seem to be working for me...I have noticed that Disqus sometimes takes a bit to load, but I'm not sure what the issue might be. :(

I only compare BOF and Ouran because they're the best examples of the reverse harem trop I can think of at the moment (except for The Wallflower / Yamato Nadeshiko Shichi Henge). I seem to be attracted to that genre, lol. All the pretty boys.

Okay, so I was watching the Japanese version of BOF and got about halfway through it when I looked up some background on the show and saw it had a Korean version. So I was like, "I LOVE KOREAN!!" and started watching that instead, then I was irritated by Goo Hyesun, and I guess I never went back and finished the Japanese version. I'm really ADD when it comes to things, unfortunately. It seems to be getting worse as I get older.  (I haven't finished a novel in months, and I used to be a voracious reader.) :( But I'll definitely add both back to the list, as well as the anime version, especially if her character matures later on. Thanks for the recs! :D

  8. lol np, i love recommending :D hope you enjoy them as much as i did

btw, how far did you get in each one? o.O

  9. Oh God, I hardly remember...I think maybe halfway through season 1 of Hana Yori Dango and maybe three eps into BOF? I know, not much. I should pick them up again when I have time.

I hope the commenting box is working again on that page...
