“Korea’s Justin Bieber” is adorable and appealing in his debut music video.
Did you like the song?
It worked for SHINee in “Replay/Noona, You’re So Pretty,” and it worked LIKE WHOA for me here: debut by appealing to your female audience’s vanity and letting her know you think she’s pretty! It helps if you can be as genuine and sweet as SHINee and sixteen-year-old Seong Min, though.
What was your favorite part of the song?
I liked the bridge, and I actually enjoyed whenever Seong Min sang in English. Good job!
So this is “Korea’s Justin Bieber.” Sure, they’re both from Canada, their ages are the same, and the similarities between this song and Bieber’s “Baby Baby” can’t be overlooked. But in terms of appeal, Seong Min has the upper hand, at least in my opinion.
Does the English make you want to rip your eardrums out?
I know that Seong Min is originally from Canada, but I’m not sure how long he spent there. Most of the lines sound like a native is singing them, but some are slightly awkward, i.e. “Give me your hands, lady,” was intended to mean something cute but ends up meaning something horrifying. Still, I like hearing him speak English, which suggests he’s a native.
Did you like the video?
So this video is basically a walking advertisement for a Japanese company called Faddy Robot. A lot, if not all, of the clothing in the music video is from there. And I’m not saying the clothes aren’t cute, but it kind of makes the entire music video like an ad…
Was there a storyline? If so, did it make sense?
Seong Min is a great boyfriend. He even produces candy on demand (and flowers and jewelry, but who cares about flowers when there’s candy? I won’t say no to jewelry, though).
He takes his girlfriend to an amusement park and possibly also to Big Ben (what is that clock tower?). He keeps producing things to give to her, which she snatches away and enjoys (sounds weird but it’s cute), then he celebrates in hilarious ways when she likes the things.
Was the dance cool and distinctive?
Okay, to me part of the dance during the chorus seemed inspired by MC Hammer’s “Can’t Touch This” dance. Just sayin’. Aside from that, I really liked the actress in this MV, Oh Ga Eun. She and Seong Min seem like a genuinely fun couple, and their little dances together were beyond adorable.
However, I didn’t get a good feel for the main dance, to be honest. I was more distracted by the fact that the physical movement in this MV seems to consist mainly of Seong Min touching his right hand to his heart and then holding it out repeatedly. He does this so often that I started looking out for it and kind of giggling when I saw him do it. I shouldn’t watch it again and keep count, really; it would be mean, especially as the poor kid’s just debuted and been unnecessarily compared to Justin Bieber even when he’s clearly the superior singer. I really shouldn’t…yeah, I’m going to.
So he does that one move…oh God, it’s worse than I thought…forty-six times. -_- Oh man.
Do the members look good?
Aww, Seong Min is so cute. The only thing I wasn’t feeling was his weird bat/lightning bolt/pterodactyl/whatever ring.
But he also really creeped me out by looking like TVXQ’s Yunho in this outfit:
I also get this odd Adrien Brody vibe from Seong Min in the way he looks and carries himself. I know it seems rather unlikely, but that’s who I was reminded of.
Which member stood out the most?
Other than actress Oh Ga Eun, who was adorable in this...While Justin Bieber didn’t interest me, Seong Min really did. Man, I was almost tearing up watching this, it was so cute.
Do you like it enough to buy the song?
No, and I didn’t buy SHINee’s “Replay” or Bieber’s “Baby Baby,” either. But this song has made me a definite fan of Seong Min’s, and that’s worth something.
Any ending thoughts?
I was really impressed by Seong Min here, and I hope to see him in his next music video soon!
“The House of Mouse will not be pleased. However, I am curious to see if Faddy Robots can produce a Justin Timberlake or Britney Spears.” [He’s referring to Disney via the “Faddy Mouse by Dissney” T-shirt Seong Min and his girlfriend are wearing.]
